Dating Culture 101 in the United States
While in some countries dating is considered as a serious family matter, independence plays a key role in shaping dating culture in the United States. Dating is often based on a personal decision in America rather than driven by the influence of parents and arranged marriages.
There are several things that is good to know about the dating customs in the United States. First, it is never considered improper for a woman to ask a man on a date, though some countries may consider it culturally inappropriate. If you love someone and want to express your feeling, please do not hesitate! However, if you ask someone out and the person says no, do not ask again; if you persist, this could be considered harassment.
Second, online dating service is often used as a tool to find potential partners in the United States. According to Pew Research Center, online dating has lost a lot of its stigma, and now 15% of the U.S. adults and 27% of 18 to 24-year-olds use online dating as a way to meet people.
Third, as above-mentioned, independence is an important part of dating customs in the United States and it is essential to love yourself, be independent, and respect partner’s personal spaces.
Healthy relationships are your goal. What is key in a healthy relationship? Communication.

Just curious about your life experiences – socially, romantically, etc.
Having grown up and currently residing in the Southeast, in an area not yet too saturated with large Asian communities, I feel my approach to Asian Masculinity is rather nuanced. Glad to share my own perspective / AMA, and would enjoy hearing from others with similar backgrounds!
Bio and quick anecdotes: Warning: TL:DR
+ Late 20s Pinoy American (first generation, 'full blood', yes my mother is a nurse lol)
+ Born a Yankee, family moved to North Carolina when I was a toddler. Lived majority of my life here ever since.
+ Grew up in farmland suburbia, 30min from a middle-sized city. Cow tipping and barnyard parties were a thing.
+ Didn't have my first Asian friend until middle school. He was my cousin who immigrated here. He now listens to country music and drives a lifted truck. Married a country white girl who is probably more of a weeboo than he is.
+ Had a few Asian friends in public high school. Still, I made up <20% of the minorities in our graduating Academic Honor Society. We had a large overall minority population though, mostly Black/Hispanic.
+Was very much a 'Chang' [Chad] in high school, founder and president of an academic society, co-captain of Lacrosse and Swimming teams, popular enough with all the social groups. My first gf and high school sweetheart was a very popular and attractive white girl, used to throw high school parties together. We dated for four years, breaking up in freshman year in college.

+ Long winding non-traditional path during my college years. Attended all sorts of various university campuses, including a HBCU (historical black college) and a private Southern Baptist school. Made up <1% Asian student population at both. No minority scholarships either, despite a high GPA. Kind of messed up actually, since a few white people got scholarships at the HBCU.
+ Ultimately worked hard and graduated from renown universities. My latest graduate program is from a T10 university. On campus, literally the first time I was surrounded by a large percentage of Asian and Asian American students thus far. Haven’t felt that except for visits to the Philippines and California. Didn't meet too many Pinoys though....(honestly feels like being a minority within a minority wherever I go. We all know Chinese and Korean Americans have tiger moms and it make sense they get into Harvard and Berkley more than Filipinos, despite Filipinos being one of the largest Asian immigrant group….but that’s another topic lol)

+Tinder/Bumble experiences overall has been good, all considering. I am tall (6'2), have a great profession and education, interesting and extroverted in my photos. I can post my tinder profile if you would like. Not sure if I am a physical 9.87924/10 but I've been told I am handsome enough. Asian girls always match me. Do okay with white girls. Quality black girls seem to love me (its a thing I've heard). Getting across the range with hot, average, and below average. But I assume probably not as many matches as white guy Chads.
+Have faced a few racist remarks and experiences but nothing too drastic. Been told by a remote few girls that they would date me if I wasn’t AA, but that comes from ignorance. Have been told by a lot more non-asian women that they never considered dating Asian guys until meeting me, or that I help break the negative stereotypes. I think interracial dating in 2018 is a lot easier now, even in the South US, as long as you live within the municipality of metros like Atlanta or New Orleans. Some barriers are thicker than others, sure, but there aren’t as many glass ceilings as you'd assume.
+Still know plenty of Asian American girls around here who only exclusively date white men lol. My female cousins for instance. So yes that’s still a thing, but may be a byproduct of limited dating availability. I only majority date white girls mostly because of access…simply aren’t many Asian girls around me to begin with.
+I legitimately love being Asian American and growing up in the South. I cringe at self-hating Asian guys. I love my dual identity and culture. Currently, trying to become more fluent in Tagalog so I can become closer to my cousins in the motherland (they speak good English though, just wanting to connect in the native tongue).

Could be the fact I was “forced” to befriend people of all backgrounds and races, but I don't have an exclusive Asian friend group, and I prefer that. I am a natural extrovert, but I think growing up without a crutch of a large Asian community (and thus, identity) has made me an 'outsider looking in', compared to whites/blacks/hispanics/asians who don't have a diverse group of friends and inter-cultural experiences. It’s too bad that the Chinese exchange students at my top university all seemed to cliquish and didn’t really intermingle with American students of any race, at least based on my observation.

Dating is not a struggle to me necessarily, probably face the same burdens as any other late-20s single man. I obviously get a lot more Tinder matches in Asia than I do in the USA, but I have also dated plenty of white girls who are not weeboo anime-lover types. Briefly dated black and latina girls as well. Funny enough, I've dated only one AA, a Chinese American girl in med school, and would enjoy dating a Pinay if I ever found a single attractive one around me. But I do admit my social and dating status is clearly influenced by my physical looks, as much as my extroverted personality and local upbringing.

I am honestly not sure if living in the Southeast is harder as an AA guy, but maybe I am woefully ignorant, and would be interested to see how my life experience would change if I migrated to California or NYC. If you think about it, I could be somewhat of a unicorn for girls who do like AA men for my area….haha I tell myself anyway.
