What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact by another person.
An assault can be committed by ANYONE, not just a stranger — a friend, an acquaintance, a colleague, a family member, or even an intimate partner.
The assault itself can take many forms.

Sexual assault can include:

  • Rape or attempted rape
  • Sexual touching or fondling
  • Sexual threats or coercion
  • Sexual harassment
  • Revenge porn (the sharing of explicit images without permission)
Don’t give up. We believe you.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is violence or other abuse in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. Domestic violence is often used as a synonym for intimate partner violence, which is committed by one of the people in an intimate relationship against the other person, and can take place in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, or between former spouses or partners.

Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

Believe Them

Believe your friend or family member without question. Expect a friend in crisis to be confused, and don’t criticize. There’s no excuse for abuse, and no one deserves it. Let them know, “It’s not your fault.”

Remove Your Expectations

People who have been abused or assaulted can experience a range of emotions and reactions, and no two survivors will react exactly the same.

Don't Give Up

It’s important to remain calm, and keep from making threats against the abuser. It’s natural to want to protect your friend, but a violent or angry reaction won’t help.

Listen, Don't Push

Offer your time and support. Let your friend know that they can talk to you about their experience. But don’t ask probing questions, or push them to share before they’re ready.

Encourage Them to Seek Help

Keep talking about the kind of support your friend needs – these needs may change as they work through the crisis. If they require medical attention or an exam, encourage them to go to the hospital within 72 hours. Rape kits are free, and you don’t have to press charges. If they want a protective order, REACH will help for free.

Confidentiality

When your friend is ready to open up, keep their story private. Don’t undermine their trust.

How to Help a Friend

or family member experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, or elder abuse

Help Them Explore Options

Remind your friend of available resources such as REACH and other non-profits, support groups, counselors, hospitals, law enforcement, and faith organizations.

Let THEM Be In Control

Encourage your friend or loved one, but let them make their own decisions. Don’t pressure them to take one path. They must decide whether to talk with someone, seek shelter, press charges, etc.

Rely on Professionals
